You will join a growing team, led by founders Brett Thornton and Tim Checkley. Brett and Tim are strategy and product leaders with over two decades of experience delivering for many of the most ambitious organisations in the world including Apple, Visa, NatWest and Tesco.

The role

We’re looking for a technical leader to grow an engineering team at Loomery and figure out the future model of software engineering with us. How will LLMs enhance software development for us and our clients? How can automation and low-code tools be used effectively? How do we best embed emergent and innovative tools, technologies and practices within client organisations? These are questions we want you to help us answer.

In the role, you will:

  • Lead engineering engagements (being client-facing and shipping code most days).
  • Partner with clients to consult on, and solve, their pressing technical questions and challenges.
  • Work with founders Tim and Brett to define our technology strategy and future engineering approach.
  • Be the technical voice of Loomery to clients and the community.
  • Represent Loomery Tech in pitches, proposals and new business meetings.
  • Mentor and manage current Loomery Engineers, enabling them to accelerate their technical and career growth.
  • Ensure the Loomery Engineering practice has the right mix of talent and skillsets to nail delivery for our clients, and enable innovation.
  • Set the standards of technical excellence - from interview process to development workflows.
  • Drive exploration in new technologies and capabilities - including cross-platform tech, AR/VR and wearables.

The first 6-12 months will be delivery focussed. On our current growth trajectory we see the emphasis shifting to scaling an engineering organisation as a ‘Head of Engineering’ after that point, if all goes well

The technologies we work with

Rather than specialise in a single technology, our philosophy has always been to think through the customer experience and business needs first, then figure out the technical solution from there. As a result, we’ve deployed a range of platforms and approaches (across web and mobile) - and will continue to. This means we’re looking for someone happy to get stuck in across languages, technologies and up and down the stack (of course, if you have a specialism, that’s absolutely fine!).

The big gigs we’re pitching for and winning are mobile (both native mobile work and cross-platform mobile technologies like Flutter/React Native) and web (typically React and node.js).

We’re being intentional about moving into newer technology spaces. That starts with a series of investments in AI and AR/VR, but we need someone who can be an opinionated leader as we look to build technical capability and experiment with the possibilities.

About you

We're looking for an ambitious engineering leader who is excited about the challenge of building a technical organisation, believes in our mission to make it easier and faster to build great products, and has experience leading teams in creating market leading digital products and services.

You will have:

  • Strong product development understanding, with experience working as part of a cohesive cross-functional team including design, product and technology.
  • 6+ years software development experience, ideally full-stack.
  • Breadth to your technical knowledge (web, mobile, AI, spatial etc.) and a solid architectural understanding.
  • A curiosity in emergent technologies and a determination to apply them in novel and innovative ways.
  • Team leadership or coaching experience and interest in creating a technical organisation.
  • Technical consulting or advisory experience.
  • Operational know-how. Experience in supporting go-live, bug investigation and resolution and shaping engagements for great customer service.
  • Excellent communication skills, happy talking to senior technical leaders in client organisations to understand their problems and how Loomery could help.
  • Strong knowledge and opinions on the latest lead generation engineering tools and techniques.

Loomery is a four year old company, so you're joining at a very exciting stage and will play a critical part in shaping our future. Change is guaranteed, although there are a few things that are important to us that are likely to remain so.

Flexibility in where we work

We know we value time together face-to-face, in our experience it’s invaluable for building lasting teams. We work hybrid, partly from home and in our Bloomsbury office 2-3 days per week. We’ll buy you everything you need to work from home successfully, whether that’s a new router, a lava lamp, or a standing desk.

Flexibility in how we work

Everyone has different needs and demands on their time. We want Loomery to be inclusive for those with caring responsibilities or health issues. As parents of young children we know how important it is to make time for growing families too. Sometimes work shouldn’t come first. We’re very open to conversations about flexible working hours and novel working arrangements.

Leaving the planet better than we found it

Everyone needs to do more to address the climate crisis, and even though our impact is still relatively small, taking action starts at home. As a first step we offset all the carbon we use. We’re also working through the process of certifying as a ‘pending B-corp’.

Tinkering & learning

In our industry it pays to spend time learning about the latest technology or tool. We also love it when people we work with develop new skills and bring new ideas to the team. We provide a £250 technology and learning grant for purchases of your choice, as long as it’s aligned with company growth and in budget, we’ll fund it.
